CHARACTER
Character Name: YoRHa No.9 Type S (9S for short)
Character Age: Unknown. As 9S was manufactured and not 'born' it's hard to discern exactly how old he is. He dies multiple times during the course of the game only to have his consciousness loaded into a new body. In that way, he has many 'births' but using the same memories at the point of back-up. He looks to be around 16-18 years old.
Canon: NieR:Automata
Canon Point: Post game (Route B)
History: Wiki
Personality: 9S has been programmed to have an inquisitive personality. The reasoning behind this is that his role within YoRHa is investigative. Regardless of YoRHa enforcing a 'no feelings' rule, having that innate curiosity actually aids him in his role. His desire to learn and understand the unknown drives him to exceed the minimum requirements of his job.
9S's kindness also aids him in his investigations. His desire to help others, whilst seeming trivial at first, actually results in better relationships which can lead to a more cooperative exchange in information. This is the logic behind this trait, however, there are times when 9S shows more than kindness. He displays an empathy or pity for others which - strictly speaking - rarely benefits him in his duties. Why it is that he is so sensitive to others is not made clear but can be seen several times throughout the game.
A developed personality trait is his sense of humour, which he often uses to diffuse difficult situations. He teases his operator with comments like "Aw, you don't have to be so formal all the time, Operator. Though I kinda like that about you.". He uses lax language like this to try and encourage a reaction from his Operator and also, perhaps, to hint at genuine affection that he has for her.
Open and direct, once comfortable he voices his opinions (often quite bluntly). He regularly complains about his job to his comrade 2B despite the fact that she is his superior and that this sort of candid display of emotion would be frowned upon by YoRHa. The rationale behind this behaviour is unclear, it may be that he's trying to bond with others or simply that he really doesn't enjoy the more mundane parts his job all that much. The latter would tie in with the curious aspect of his personality - in that his inquisitive nature is not being satisfied when performing menial tasks.
He has, however, show interest in activities that have no relation to his role. For example, he states that he enjoys taking baths because it 'feels good', despite the fact that an android would have no need to perform this ritual. 9S also state that once the war against Machines is over, he would like to take 2B shopping and buy her a gift. These sentiments show how 9S has an interest in what everyday life must have been like for humanity in the past and, perhaps, how he yearns for that sort of lifestyle with a friend (namely 2B).
9S's relationship with 2B develops throughout the game. He initially starts off very formally, referring to her with honourifics and using very polite language. However, as time goes on their bond strengthens to the point where they are much more open with one another. 2B is still relatively measured in her interactions, 9S, however, divulges a lot of his feelings to her and goes so far as to put her safety above his in combat.
**SPOILERS**
When 2B is killed at the beginning of Route C in front of 9S's eyes something in him snaps, vowing to exact revenge on her killer. His previously upbeat personality shows evidence of genuine grief as he mourns his partner. Shortly after this he is infected by a virus with accelerates his decent into a grief-driven madness. All of this shows that whilst 9S may have had a pre-set and pre-programmed personality he adapted, changed and evolved because of things he experienced. He is a true, sentient A.I.
Inventory:
- Clothes (including the blindfold - which has an augmented display to highlight key features for combat purposes).
- Short sword (named Cruel Oath)
- Small shoulder pouch with a selection of microchips inside it
Abilities:
Whilst 9S is quite able-bodied in combat with a number of weapons (favouring short swords and katana) his main ability is his hacking skill.
9S is able to access all manner of digital and electronic devices via his remote hacking abilities. He seems to access these points through a kind of short wave and then can bypass almost any form of security. Given a number of seconds he can crack most systems and control them. Once 9S has assumed control he can either make the unit self-destruct, he can enslave or manipulate it himself.
Apart from this, he is an android meaning that he never tires, never needs to eat or sleep (although he does enjoy 'taking rests' from time to time). He's agile, dexterous and his reflexes do not deteriorate with fatigue.
Flaws:
9S's curiosity could certainly work against him by getting him into trouble through his desire to sate his inquisitiveness. However, his greatest flaw is how attached he can get to someone. On the surface, this may not seem like a negative trait but by connecting on such a deep level the threat of having them taken away could lead him to be rash, dangerous or even suicidal.
